TYPOLOGY OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE-TERRITORIAL UNITS OF UKRAINE ON THE LEVEL OF RAILWAY DEVELOPMENT UP TO 2014

The article suggests a method of integral estimation of the level of development of railway transport by the values of the composite index. A typification of the regions of Ukraine according to the level of development of the railway transport has been carried out. It was noted that compactness of the territory, favorable natural and geographical conditions, significant transit potential, high transport accessibility of all regions, availability of international transport corridors are the main factors causing the development of rail transport in Ukraine. The high level of development of rail transport here is due to the specialization of the regions in the domestic servicing of industrial production needs. The Kyiv region occupies leading positions in Ukraine in terms of passenger traffic and mobility of the population, which is explained by the considerable labor migration of residents in the region, by the large transit of the population and by the attraction for visiting Kiev as the capital of Ukraine from neighboring regions. Zaporozhye is characterized by high values for all studied indicators, in particular for the volume of transportation of goods and passengers. High passenger turnover here is associated with active summer migrations of recreants on the coast of the Azov Sea. Thirteen regions of Ukraine are defined as regions with medium intensive development of railway transport. These are mainly regions of central, south-western, southern and north-eastern Ukraine. Among them, Zhytomyr, Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Zakarpattia and Vinnytsia regions are the most prosperous transport network. Significant density of railways allows these regions to make full use of their transit potential. It has been proved that practically all regions of Ukraine, excluding Volyn, Rivne, Chernigov and Nikolaev regions, were characterized until 2014 by a fairly developed railway network, medium and high rates of transportation of goods and passengers, and considerable mobility of residents, indicates maximum use of transport number of transit) potential of each of the regions of the country.

Key words: transport, railway transport, density of railway tracks, population mobility coefficient, ranking, integral estimation, composite index.
